Eviction Prevention

Evictions have to go through the court system but we want to do everything in our power from preventing it from happening. If your client is over 15 days late on paying their rent the landlord will send a notice letting them know they need to pay the rent in the next 5 days or the eviction process can be started. If your client does try to pay within the time period and the landlord will not accept it an eviction would not be able to take place.

There are occasions when a landlord does not need to give notice they are filing an eviction such as drugs, violence, and other crime related reasons. A resource that can be helpful is HUD’s Tenant Rights for Rhode Island which can provide your client with information about their rights to stay in their home. Another resource for your client is Rhode Island Legal Services’ Your Rights as a Tenant which clearly explains the eviction process.
